METHOD

Proper Littl’ Pups does not advocate harsh handling as a way of training dogs. For decades people have used a very aggressive and often painful approach to training. This is popularly referred to as “Dominance” or “negative reinforcement” training.

Dominance methods have come under careful scrutiny by the scientific, behavioral and training communities over recent years. The resulting developments have led to many trainers switching their training methods to those which have been proven to build a far more solid and mutually rewarding relationship between a human and their canine companion.

Leading Animal Behaviorist, Veterinarian and Trainer, Dr. Ian Dunbar,PhD, BVetMed, MRCVS, CPDT is among those at the forefront of developing the more humane “lure & reward” or “positive reinforcement” techniques. These techniques don’t merely punish bad or unwanted behavior, but work to correct the cause of the behavior. At Proper Littl’ Pups we take these principles to heart, working with our canine clients to encourage positive behavior rather than dominate or bully them.

The links below will help explain the difference between the two philosophies, why we take the position we do and teach the gentler techniques that have proven to be so successful.
